INTRODUCTION It is important to make a clear distinction on the scope of work of the GMSG guideline for sampling grinding circuits.

The final product of the grinding circuit where the mills were operated in series, was composed of the overflow from the three hydrocyclones operated in the circuit, with P 80 0.104mm. For the circuit with the ball mills in parallel, line B, each ball mill was fed with 499th at 64.7 solids, P 80 3.714mm and the mill discharge P 80 0.153mm.
Currently, the grinding circuits are inefficient in achieving the aspired product fineness of xP,80 125 m even at low to normal throughputs 450-600 th. An evaluation and optimization study of the circuit performance was conducted to improve the product fineness through circuit surveys, experimental lab work and simulations.
To evaluate the existing performance of the grinding circuit mass balancing studies were carried out by using the plant survey data. The flow rates are given in Figure 3. During the sampling survey the plant capacity was measured as 84.5 tph. The measured value of the flotation feed fineness was found to be only about 43-45 - 74 m in the circuit.
